Welcome to the West Coast Athletic Club family – we hope you will enjoy running with us and we look forward to getting to know you! We are a great club, a lively social bunch of people from all walks (and runs) of life. We train hard and we play harder!

Please note we are no longer based at the Big Bay Lifesavers Club, our new temporary home is the Table View Tennis Club, behind the Virgin Active gym opposite Bayside Mall. “Temporary”, because we are in the process of fundraising to build our own club house on the Table View sports complex behind the tennis club.

CLUB MEETINGS & RUNS

The CALENDAR section of this website also contains listings of all local road races, trail events, cross country schedules and all club events such as organised training runs, social functions and events.

Our club pack run happens on Tuesday evenings. We meet at the club house at approximately 17:45 in summer and a little earlier at 17:15 in winter. The summer run starts at 18:00 and in winter (from April) this changes to 17:30. The pack runs are 5km and 8km and you are welcome to slot in wherever you feel comfortable.  The bar is open for a cold one afterwards too.

Our club Tuesday Time Trials take place on the first and third Tuesday of each month. These are timed events, after each time trial the times are loaded onto the Tuesday Time Trials page where you can monitor your progress and compare your times to other runners.  You can run either the 5km or 8km, alternatively if you choose not to run time trials, you are welcome to still do the leisurely pack run.

On Trail Thursday evenings you are welcome to join our trail group for a very social 5/10km run around the vlei at McPhersons Nursery on Gill Road.  The run starts at 18:00 in summer (17h30 in winter) and has become a popular evening with beautiful views and it is something different – dogs and walkers are welcome too.  This is then followed by delicious burgers in the restaurant (at a discounted rate for our club runners).

Centurions: Sundays mornings during the summer months. At 06h30 we meet at the Virgin Active Table View Gym to share lifts and head off for the popular Centurions morning in the mountains around Kirstenbosch/Newlands Forest.  Distances range between an 8km walk, 11km trail run and a 16km or 20km part road, part trail run. The longer distances are popular Two Oceans training routes. It’s a spectacular scenic run, quite challenging, which then ends at UCT car park, an event which has been running since the 1970’s. Every time the run happens a log book is used to note the participants, with special t-shirts awarded to those who complete 50 or 100 runs.
Details are confirmed on our FB page each week as sometimes Centurions is cancelled due to other major events in the area (eg. Two Oceans) or severe weather. Centurions is not specific to West Coast, anybody is welcome and encouraged to join. Contact Bruce Wood for more info.

Cross Country: Held during the winter months while Centurions is closed, is a great way to keep fit and build strength while participating in a cheap and fun inter-club competition, open to the whole family. Our Club Monthly Awards Night takes place on the first Tuesday evening of the month at 19:00.  A delicious meal is available to purchase at the club house – which our resident chefs (volunteer members) always manages to surprise us with!  The evening includes our Monthly awards which are presented to the best performing runners as well as “fines” and/or lucky draws.  In addition to this, we are often very fortunate to have a variety of guest speakers too.

TRAINING PROGRAMMES

We have our local coach, Alan Green, who has a wealth of experience and knowledge to assist with all your training requirements.  He is available for assessments, training programs and also leads various running groups.   Alan is very passionate about training the juniors, but all runners are welcome to contact him for any help with your running goals.

The club currently supports a training program which has been developed specifically for West Coast AC members by world renowned coach, Norrie Williamson. The program is designed for all levels of runners, whether you are a total newbie on the road or a runner with years of km’s under your belt!

There is an opportunity every 6 weeks to join the Norrie program and the cost is approximately R100 per month.  Should you wish to find out more information about this program, our Vice Captain of Long Distance – David Yuill, is the champion for this and can be reached on email: vicecaptainlong@westcoastathleticlub.co.za
